National Environmental Leadership Award

These programs are leading the way toward real solutions, and giving hope to millions of Americans — many of them children — who battle asthma.
Former EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
The Healthy Neighborhoods Program staff work hard every day to improve the lives of New Yorkers with asthma. Having this national recognition helps us to honor their hard work, celebrate their success and articulate the value of this program to potential funders and decision-makers.
Dr. Howard A. Freed, 2011 Award Winner, Director, Center for Environmental Health, NYS Department of Health
This recognition from the U.S. EPA has validated our past efforts, increased our organization’s visibility in the community, and empowered us to take a risk in creating new programs for the future.
Dr. Mamta Reddy, 2011 Award Winner, South Bronx Asthma Partnership, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center
We have a long way to go, but with the innovation and hard work of these outstanding programs, we are making progress.
Former EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
Receiving this award will assist us in demonstrating to our patients that they are receiving quality asthma education from a nationally recognized program.
Dr. Mary  Mason, 2011 Award Winner, Centene Corporation ®, Nurtur ®, Managed Health Services
The most valuable part of winning the award was increased visibility among providers, community partners, and state Medicaid agencies.
Dr. David Keleti, 2016 Award Winner, AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies
Winning the award has opened doors for us that were previously closed and moved our program much further along in achieving sustainability.
Kathleen Bowden, 2017 Award Winner, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, You Can Control Asthma Now (UCAN) Program
The award has brought us visibility and has expanded our reach with health centers and other community organizations that would like to replicate our program.
Dr. Acklema Mohammad, 2016 Award Winner, Urban Health Plan, Inc.

In 2020, EPA’s Asthma team recognized great changes in the landscape in which we work, particularly in national trends showing that asthma care increasingly includes environmental management as a standard. As whole-community systems coordinate public health, housing, environment, clinical care, healthcare, and community partners to deliver comprehensive care at scale, we believe our awards program has successfully shifted to recognize what best performance looks like today.

The current application keeps the three priority areas:  1) Comprehensive Asthma Management – 1.a Management and Operations, 1.b Integrated Health Care Services, 1c. Tailored Environmental Services, 2) Getting Results: Evaluation, and 3) Sustainability.

Refining the application. In an attempt at continuous quality improvement, annually we review the comments and suggestions received by the review panels to edit text, streamline instructions, and make applying feel easier.

The National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management is the highest recognition a program and its leaders can receive for delivering excellent environmental asthma management as part of their comprehensive asthma care services. Each year, EPA honors exceptional health plans, health care providers and communities in action with this prestigious award.
