It is designed to take place in a small group setting with an American Lung Association-trained facilitator. The program consists of a brief 15-20 minute orientation via telephone, and a 3 – 4 hour intensive hands-on session that covers understanding the pathophysiology of asthma, improving communication with healthcare providers, learning about asthma medicines, tracking asthma symptoms and using a peak flow meter, identifying and controlling asthma triggers, utilizing an asthma action plan and knowing what to do in an emergency. This is reinforced with a follow-up phone call from the facilitator to workshop participants to inquire about their ability to implement what was learned in the workshop and to help them solve any problems they have encountered. The curriculum uses a range of instructional styles, including lecture, group discussion and skills practice. The program is designed to be delivered to small groups of up to 10 participants in order to maximize learning. Participants in the program have shown improvements in asthma-related knowledge, improvements in confidence to manage their asthma, improvements in attitudes to control their asthma, and improvements in self-management practices. Breathe Well, Live Well is available in English and Spanish.
