Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan

The Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan is improving children's health and wellbeing by eliminating harmful housing conditions.  Specifically in regards to asthma, the Healthy Homes Coalition provides education and outreach and direct services to help families and landlords implement environmental controls for asthma triggers.  Healthy Homes is also actively engaged in shaping local policy, especially housing policy, to ensure children are protected from environmental harm.

The Healthy Homes Coalition offers both prevention and interventions services.  Target households are low-income families living in older housing in high-risk neighborhoods in the cities of Grand Rapids and Wyoming, Michigan.  Priority is given to households with children 0-5 years of age.

The Healthy Homes Coaliiton has developed a strong proficiency to address pest issues with integrated pest management strategies and has successfully cleared the air in dozens of homes through a combination of direct services and family/landlord education.  Other environmental controls addressed are dampness and moisture (and resulting mold, dust mite populations), VOCs, ETS and other air quality concerns.

The Healthy Homes Coalition addresses asthma triggers within a wider healthy homes approach that also ensures children are protected from numerous other hazards such as lead poisoning, radon exposure, fire safety, carbon monoxide poisoning, trips and falls, burns and scalds, accidental injury, poisonings and more.

The Healthy Homes Coalition has a track record of consulting with and collaborating with other west Michigan communities, particularly Muskegon and Benton Harbor.
