Children are routinely exposed to environmental toxins in where they live, work and play, i.e., in their homes, schools, workplaces for adolescents, and their yards, parks, playgrounds and other recreational locations. Where can residents of the Mid-Atlantic find unbiased and reliable information on environmental toxins and their effects on children? Where can parents and caregivers find answers about a known or suspected substance that they are concerned may affect their child’s health? Where can health professionals get information about known or suspected exposures to environmental health hazards?
The Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment (MACCHE) is one of ten pediatric environmental health specialty units in the US. Based at Children's National Medical Center, the Mid-Atlantic Center's services are available at no cost to those who live and work in Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and West Virginia.
MACCHE is funded by the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC) through a cooperative agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Since 2006, The Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment has educated over 20,000 people on children’s environmental health and responded to over 300 requests for consultation on environmental health problems.
