The Puerto Rico Asthma Project (PRAP) mission is to reduce the asthma burden. PRAP operations are conducted in collaboration between the Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDOH) and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To reach the intended outcomes and goals, PRAP has four main components:  Surveillance, Partnership, Interventions and Evaluation.

The PRAP goals for the 2009-2014 cooperative agreement are:

1.    Maintain and expand existing partnerships to oversee the implementation of the State Asthma Plan interventions.

2.    Maintain and expand the existing asthma surveillance system.

3.    Reduce asthma disparities among populations disproportionately affected by asthma as compared to the general population with asthma.

4.    Increase the proportion of people with current asthma who report that they have received self-management education.

5.    Develop and implement an evaluation plan to measure the effectiveness and accountability of the PRAP and the three major components (partnership, surveillance and interventions).

Maine Asthma Prevention and Control Program is a State program aimed at reducing the burden of asthma in Maine, raising awareness of the cost associated with asthma, increasing patient self-management, and decreasing asthma in disparate populations through the use if best-practice interventions within the system of public health.

The Maine Asthma Prevention and Control Program was created in March 2002. It was created to address the issues surrounding asthma in the state of Maine, and provide leadership and coordination for asthma prevention and intervention activities statewide.

Some of the program activities include:

  • Monitoring of asthma prevalence at the state and community levels
  • Education and training of health professionals on the current methods of diagnosing and treating asthma
  • Patient and family education on how to manage the disease
  • Dissemination of information on programs shown to reduce hospitalization, emergency room visits and absenteeism due to asthma
  • Consultation to and support of community-based asthma prevention and control programs
  • Partnering with agencies across the State to collaborate on asthma initiatives and interventions
