At the University of Michigan Center for Managing Chronic Disease, we have developed a statistical method to create a sort of virtual control group so that in real-world, pre/post studies of interventions to improve asthma control among children, we can use this virtual control group as a way to account for the natural improvement in symptoms we see in children over time. This method will allow programs to more rigorously evaluate outcomes without requiring an actual control group.

However, we are in need of some data from Latino/Hispanic children with asthma in order to create the virtual control groups.  We need data:

-that was collected at two time points for the same children (ideally ~12 months apart)

-for which the children did not have any special intervention (beyond usual care) between data collection points

-on the following variables:  age, gender, ethnicity/race, self-report of daytime symptoms in last 2 or 4 weeks, self-report of nighttime symptoms in last 2 or 4 weeks, ED visits in past year due to asthma [ideally, but not required], and hospitalizations in past year due to asthma [ideally, but not required]

If anyone has these data and would like to collaborate with us, please let me know!  We also welcome any recommendations on possible sources.

Thanks!

I would be interested in collaborating with your group on this. We will be wrapping up data collection on 267 Mexican and Puerto Rican children with asthma whom we have followed for 12 months (no intervenetion) this fall. We have additional data that you may find useful as well. Plesae contact me and we can set up a time to discuss further!
