Patient Education Handouts

Our hospital isn't quite ready to start an intervention, but a lot of the handouts are useful.  It sounds like we can download and use the handouts.  Is the project also okay with slight modifications, adding an institution's name, phone numbers, etc... and citing the CHAMPS project?ZZ

Thank you for your question.

You are welcome to download and use the patient education handouts in your hospital, and you are welcome to add relevant information from your institution to them.

We find that these education materials work best when a provider can sit with the family and walk through the content in a one-on-one setting.  Many of the patients in our studies were low literacy, so we have tried to include images as much as possible.  This is also why we encourage staff to take time to go through the content with the family before they leave the clinic.

We also recommend limiting the number of handouts given to a family at one time, as too much information can overwhelm them.  I realize it may be difficult to give out information slowly over time in an hospital setting where you may have less frequent interactions with a family, but you might try an approach where you draw the family's attention to the information to the 1-2 handouts that are most relevant to them.

At El Rio we freely adapted CHAMPS handouts and materials to make them retain the look and feel of being El Rio products, which after being customized, they were.
