Are there any studies that have validated actual savings (reduced medical costs) using insurance claims data vs. self-reported data? If so, can you share the source/reference?

That's a great question.  One criticism payers have made of cost analysis studies is that they don't use claims data and don't use actual payment amounts.  We are working with our Medicaid office to get the actual Medicaid cost for our cost analysis.  Hopistal charges aren't always what is paid.  One cost analysis might not fit all payers because they all have different negotiated rates.  We will have claims data for our READY study and hope to publish in several years.  Sorry for delay.  This is a good question for National Asthma Control Program at CDC - they did the community guide on asthma.  http://www.thecommunityguide.org/asthma/index.html.  You want self-reported data to analyze indirect cost.
