What is the Central Georgia Asthma Education Initiative (CGAEI)? The Central Georgia Asthma Education Initiative (CGAEI) is a community health education project to increase awareness of environmental triggers of asthma.

 

This project is designed to train parents, teachers, students, other faculty and staff, community leaders and local residents about the harmful effects of environmental triggers such as: mold, bus idling, ventilation, pesticides and secondhand smoke. 

What is the purpose of the project?

To increase the number of children and youth receiving evidence-based asthma disease management services.

To improve the organization, structure, delivery and financing of childhood asthma management at the community level, through service integration, coordination and policy development.

To increase the number of children and/or parents and caregivers who receive asthma education.

To increase the number of school nurses/healthcare staff that receive asthma education. 

To increase the number of schools who adopt school asthma, smoke free and no bus idling policies. 

To develop the media campaign to promote asthma awareness.

 

Who is the campaign for? 

The campaign is designed to reach Youth and Adult residents of Baldwin, Crawford, Hancock, Jones, Putnam, Wilkinson, Monroe and Washington counties who may or may not have asthma.

Policy and Environmental Adoption 

Asthma Friendly School Environments (Educating students and staff) 

Education and Action Plans for Students with Asthma 

Education for Parents of Children with Asthma 

Asthma Education through Community-Wide Media Awareness Campaign 

Why is it important to get involved? 

Georgia currently ranks 19th among states in the percentage of children with asthma problems. 

Asthma is the most common chronic disease among Georgia's children and youth affecting more than 10% of individuals younger than 17 years of age. 

Asthma is one of the top reasons why children under the age of 15 are hospitalized and miss school. 

How can individuals or organizations help? 

Distribute communication tools 

Display information in on countertops, bulletin boards, in newsletters, websites, etc.

Take extra time with patients and clients with asthma to provide them with information and asthma action plans. 

Become a cause marketing partner to support additional education and outreach. 

Participate in educational sessions offered by the CGAEI staff. 

Allow students with asthma to participate in asthma education sessions at school.
