Maine Asthma Prevention and Control Program is a State program aimed at reducing the burden of asthma in Maine, raising awareness of the cost associated with asthma, increasing patient self-management, and decreasing asthma in disparate populations through the use if best-practice interventions within the system of public health.

The Maine Asthma Prevention and Control Program was created in March 2002. It was created to address the issues surrounding asthma in the state of Maine and provide leadership and coordination for asthma prevention and intervention activities statewide.

Some of the program activities include:

  • Monitoring of asthma prevalence at the state and community levels
  • Education and training of health professionals on the current methods of diagnosing and treating asthma
  • Patient and family education on how to manage the disease
  • Dissemination of information on programs shown to reduce hospitalization, emergency room visits and absenteeism due to asthma
  • Consultation to and support of community-based asthma prevention and control programs
  • Partnering with agencies across the State to collaborate on asthma initiatives and interventions
