The objective of the program is to promote children''s adherence to asthma self-management, in particular peak flow monitoring for symptom management to improve health outcomes (i.e., decrease asthma episodes, acute care visits for asthma, missed school days, and ED visits)and asthma quality of life. NIH/NINR-funded study that tested an intervention that included NAEPP eduation and behavioral strategies. Children receiving the nurse-administered asthma education and contingency management intervention demonstrated higher adherence to PEF monitoring than control group children. Health outcomes and asthma quality of life improved for all children taught PEF monitoring participating in the study. This research is significant in the evaluation of effective interventions for teaching children to manage their asthma at home. The results are clinically significant in reducing pediatric asthma morbidity and improving asthma quality of life.
