The National Healthy Homes Training Center and Network provides training for public health and housing practitioners in the assessment and treatment of housing-related health hazards, with a focus on practical and cost-effective methods. Trainees also have the opportunity to become a “Healthy Homes Specialist.” Since its inception in 2005, the Training Center has trained more than 17,000 individuals and expanded from seven to more than 50 partners.

The Asthma Regional Council of New England offers a “Core Competency Course for Community Health Workers,” a 48-hour course on fundamental CHW skills such as communication, assessment, cultural responsiveness, documentation, organization and advocacy. The training and professional development center strives to enhance the capacity of CHWs to provide outreach and health education in the diverse communities of Boston.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services online Health Navigation course is designed for individuals working in communities who connect people to health services. The training is designed for CHWs, Health Navigators, social workers and other health care professionals. The course was developed to offer materials in a practical and accessible manner. Online training incorporates organizational, documentation, assessment and service-coordination skills.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Diabetes Training and Technical Assistance Center provides courses in community health work that are designed to meet the needs of the diabetes prevention and control workforce. Training topics include: the value in creating public-private partnerships; comprehensive models and approaches to worksite health promotion; and the role of non-traditional external partnerships, policies, practices and programs. Training courses consist of multiple modules and readings designed to provide applicable health information within a diabetes-specific context.

The Michigan Public Health Training Center Course, “CHWs and Nurses: Roles and Relationships for Population Health Improvement,” provides participants with certification and continuing education credits through the Michigan Public Health Training Center. The courses target public health and community health practitioners—nurses, community health workers, health educators, social workers, physicians; students in allied health; and those interested in population health services. Topics include: CHW contributions to improving public health, current issues in nursing/CHW services, and future initiatives in improving partnerships.

Multnomah County Health Department’s Community Capacitation Center provides training and technical assistance to organizations working to establish or strengthen their community health worker programs. This support includes recruitment and hiring of CHWs, development of CHW job descriptions, and support and supervision of CHWs. The Center’s 80-hour basic curriculum consists of three components and offers skill-based orientation to the health and social services system.

The University of Southern Mississippi Center for Sustainable Health Outreach (CSHO) works to support the role of community health workers as an essential component of sustainable community wellness. Through trainings such as The Community Health Advisor Network (CHAN) Training Workshop I & II and the Annual Unity Conference, designed for and about CHWs, CSHO provides support and technical assistance to CHWs. CSHO also assists CHWs by facilitating partnerships with funders, policy makers, health systems, and community organizations.

CHWTraining.org is designed to bring the benefits of an in-depth professional development program to health care systems and health departments without the cost associated with a lengthy in-person training. Courses are available in multiple formats to suit individual needs, including instructor-led online training, blended learning options and self-paced modules. Courses range from improving health literacy, to building healthy patient-provider relationships, to providing community-based resources and support.

Texas Healthy Homes Training Center (Certified Training Center for Community Health Workers) provides certification training for public health professionals, community health workers, housing specialists, and agencies involved with children and caregivers, including the Head Start program. The curriculum promotes cross-training of public health and housing practitioners and provides a forum to exchange practical guidance, network and collaborate.
