I have coordinated an Asthma Education Outreach Program within our School Disctrict Community that includes our staff, parents and students.
The program provides education to the teachers and staff at the schools prior to the start of the school year. The program discusses managing asthma triggers in the classroom, gym, sports and after school activities.
The program involves the coaches also that implement the asthma care plans. Asthma care plans are provided to the staff with the student''s information of trigger, emergency information, medical and medication information.
This processs is completed yearly with the staff and updated as needed during the year.
ALL of our students receive Asthma Awareness Education during their health class lesson plans therefore creating a school wide knowledge about asthma.
Presentations about management of asthma at school and home are done with parents as well.
Small group asthma education classes are held to improme the education and management skills for the students with asthma diagnosis.
Currently, I am working with the School of Nursing from Germanna Community College and educating the student nurses about Managing Asthma Triggers.
A student is interning with me to prepare lesson plans and teach to the students. I am so excited to be educating our future nurses.
Our goals include to educate every student, teacher, and coach how to manage asthma in the school enviorment. The staff member will learn how to idenify and implement classrooom accomadations for the students with asthma.
The Students and Staff will have an understanding of asthma, treatment and prevention.
Staff and students will reconize the needs and concerns of the person with asthma.
The student and staff will identify practices to promote optimal management in the school enviorment.
I Have been doing school education for 6 years with great success. We have seen decrease in asthma related emergencies and 911 calls. The sports coaches are more aware and following asthma care plans. Peers of students are able to identify triggers and symptoms of asthma and be of assistance to those having issues with asthma.
Since the start of our program in my school, all 31 schools in our county have adopted the progam!
Has been exciting to create, share, teach and manage asthma in the school community.
