Green Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting: A Toolkit for Early Care and Education

Green Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting: A Toolkit for Early Care and Education is a set of materials for child care programs that provides educational information on choosing safer products, tools, procedures and policies for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting in child care facilities.

This Toolkit is a user-friendly resource that helps ECE professionals transition to a ‘green' cleaning program. It is  designed to educate early care and education (ECE) directors, providers, parents, and child care regulators on health risks, including asthma, of commonly used cleaning products and antimicrobial pesticides. It will assist ECE programs in implementing a cleaning program that uses safer products and procedures.

The Toolkit includes a curriculum, fact sheets, posters, a checklist, and a wallet card. It educates child care providers on the risks of commonly used cleaning products and offers reduced-risk and nonchemical options.

The Toolkit was co-authored by Dr. Vickie Leonard with UC San Francisco’s Institute on Health and Aging (principal investigator), Carol Westinghouse with Informed Green Solutions and Dr. Asa Bradman with UC Berkeley’s Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health. It can be downloaded from the Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health website at: http://cerch.org/greencleaningtoolkit/.  Hardcopies can be ordered at the Informed Green Solutions website at: http://www.informedgreensolutions.org/?q=publications/green-cleaning-toolkit.

Wellapets - Asthma Education Pets for phones and tablets!

Wellapets is an educational virtual pet game for phones and tablets which teaches and motivates kids ages 6-11 to manage asthma by caring for a lovable pet that also has asthma. Wellapets is created by LifeGuard Games in Boston with pediatricians and other clinicians in the area.

In Wellapets, kids adopt their own Wellapet from the App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore, play games with it, collect gifts for its home and ultimately take care of their pet. Wellapets has been designed with clinician input such that care for the pet teaches kids what they need to know to manage their own asthma.

Our educational content focuses on: controller inhaler technique and timing, trigger avoidance and symptom recognition and action according to an Asthma Action Plan.

We've been featured in MobiHealthNews, CBS, asth.ma and Bostinno!
