The Preventive Care Program for Urban Children with Asthma partners with Rochester (NY) city schools, primary care practices, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Rochester, and the Rochester community, to conduct research focusing on the testing of interventions to improve health care for urban children who suffer from childhood asthma. Our goal is to develop sustainable models for identifying and treating children with this disease.

Our mission is to increase the scientific understanding of asthma/allergic diseases across all ages, to translate these findings into innovative approaches and to implement these approaches in the asthma community through an integrated Institute of scientists, clinicians, educators, patients and the community, thereby improving the health of asthma patients.

The current project is located in San Antonio, Texas and involves five elementary campuses within the North East Independent School District where asthma prevalence rates are above the district average of 12% . These schools are considered economically disadvantaged and where asthma may be negatively impacting the students in meeting their full academic potential due to loss of instruction time and/or absenteeism. This is based on several metrics: prevalence rates, aggregate inhaler usage.

BCM Environmental Health Service

The Baylor College of Medicine Environmental Health Service (BCM-EHS) has been involved with educating health care professionals (and aspiring professionals) and the public about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of environmentally induced or exacerbated illness for more than ten years. The BCM-EHS will soon begin offering clinical services in environmental health, with a focus on helping patients with difficult-to-control asthma.
