Was it difficult to retain public housing CHW's? How did you deal with any issues that might have come up for them? For example, we have found that many of our residents are dealing with trauma and other social issues and sometimes are unable to consistently stay in our training programs.

We are leading a demonstration project to evaluate pay-for-success/Health Impact Bonds to scale-up a proven asthma program in Fresno, CA (see http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/121-a45/). Investors provide upfront capital to pay for the program, and health plans/insurers that benefit from reduced costs share validated savings with investors. Have other programs used similar kinds of financing?

What did the intervention for cockroaches consist of? Mice? Bed bugs?

Who/what funds the Community Health Workers (CHWs)?

How much funding did you receive from HUD for this program? Were there any other funding sources (e.g. in kind from Siani or CHA, other local funders, etc)?

I have two questions for you:

1.) I was surprised to see the high health care utilization rates at baseline for the people enrolled in the intervention.  Did I understand correctly that 68% of people who participated in this program had visited the ER for an asthma related event in the 6 months prior to starting the program?Do you think this rate was unusually high?  Or typical of kids/adults living in public housing units with asthma?

What was your curriculem for the 70 hour asthma community health worker training program?

I will be presenting a session on CHW and asthma at this conference in June.  Would love to get a copy of one of your photos of your CHWs with the diplomas!
