Ashtrays in East Lansing Housing Units

Posted on: 05 August 2015 By: smokefree1988

Question for Patricia: One of your slides indicated that existiing ashtrays in the apartment buildings were being turned into artwork. Does any local smokefree legislation exist that prohibits smoking tobacco products in pubic common areas of residenes such as the lobby, laundry room and hallways? When the NYC Smokefree Air Act went into effect smoking became prohibited in all common areas of apartment buildings (not the actual apartments) such as the lobby, hallways and laundry rooms, etc.

Getting through to Management Companies

In my jurisdiction, many of the multi-unit properties are owned or managed by management companies. Everyone I speak with that works for a management company claims that they do not have the right to decide whether a property goes smoke-free. Has anyone had success working with management companies to turn their properties smoke-free? If so, what was your tactic?

Pesticide-Free

Have you or authorities you work with considered adopting pesticide-free policies for structural or lawn care? Have they considered encouraging minimized use of air fresheners, deodorizers, and toxic fragrance products in housing?

Converting to non-smoking buildings in a rent-controlled jurisdiction

Posted on: 05 August 2015 By: jcheng

We have a rent-controlled jurisdiction in San Francisco, which has presented a challenge for going smoke-free and has also created a bit of a divide for the tenant-rights community (worry that landlords will use this as a basis to evict in a hot housing market and to get rid of their rent-controlled tenants). If landlords were to insert a new provision in the leases about smoke-free units, that would be considered a reduction in services without an attendant decrease in rent-- which is not allowed.
