I hear much about smoking being bad in federally funded multi family projects, and it is, management at my building say they would have issues renting if they went smoke free.  Although those of us who actually live in this buildings know how bad the environment is.  How come mold is so over looked, how come even when you complain about health issues from pesticides and breathing issues from pesticides they still come in for added applications living residents with no save place to go for days to weeks to ever again.

Question for Patricia: One of your slides indicated that existiing ashtrays in the apartment buildings were being turned into artwork. Does any local smokefree legislation exist that prohibits smoking tobacco products in pubic common areas of residenes such as the lobby, laundry room and hallways? When the NYC Smokefree Air Act went into effect smoking became prohibited in all common areas of apartment buildings (not the actual apartments) such as the lobby, hallways and laundry rooms, etc.

In my jurisdiction, many of the multi-unit properties are owned or managed by management companies. Everyone I speak with that works for a management company claims that they do not have the right to decide whether a property goes smoke-free. Has anyone had success working with management companies to turn their properties smoke-free? If so, what was your tactic?

Have you or authorities you work with considered adopting pesticide-free policies for structural or lawn care? Have they considered encouraging minimized use of air fresheners, deodorizers, and toxic fragrance products in housing?
