The Asthma Care Improvement Initiative's objectives are to improve electronic medical record systems, educate caregivers and children with asthma about the disease and engage them in a disease management partnership, and to implement an asthma care protocol reflecting the recommendations of the 2007 NAEEP guidelines.

The Asthma Control Program in St. Mary's County focuses on children 2-18 years with asthma with the goal of decreasing emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and missed school days associated with asthma. The nurse makes a home visit to identify environmental triggers and provide remediation supplies, asthma teaching, and written follow-up to the patient's primary care provider, teacher, and parent.
Members with a diagnosis of Asthma or those using asthma pharmaceuticals are required to meet with a Nurse Health Coach annually, have an Asthma action plan, Pneumonia vaccine (applicable, and maintain medical and rescue therapy for incentive bonus and options for preferred health plan.
