First 5 Riverside uses Proposition 10 tobacco tax revenues to fund early education, health and child care services that help children through age 5 develop a strong foundation for success in school and throughout their lives. A successful school experience is compromised for children with poorly managed asthma. These children miss more days of school and experience higher rates of hospitalizations than other children. These children commonly experience ongoing fatigue and drowsiness as their sleep is often restless or interrupted due to symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. We also see irritability and behavioral problems in those who may be misusing medications, such as daily and repeated use of quick relief inhalers---this also interferes with their ability to learn. A fundamental concept of Proposition 10 is based on prevention; preventing problems from occurring is better for children, and identifying problems as early as possible leads to better and more effective outcomes. Asthma provides an excellent example of the value of prevention and early intervention for the future development of children. May is Allergy and Asthma Awareness month, it is a great opportunity to offer a variety of resources for parents/caregivers and providers of young children to Be Active with Asthma!

The 2007 National Institutes of Health Asthma Guidelines recommends that regular home peak flow readings play a central role in classifying asthma severity and in guiding asthma therapy. Despite the wide availability of manual and electronic peak flow meters, asthmatic children and their parents have not traditionally practiced regular, home peak flow use.
