Certified Asthma Educator

Posted on: 12 September 2012 By: amjensen

How can a health educator qualify to sit for the Certified Asthma Educator exam? How is it possible for us to give 1000 hours of one on one asthma education? All of my education is done in group settings (Open Airways with American Lung Assocation, etc)

I have ALOT of experience with asthma and various medication and treatment plans since I have asthma as well as all three of my children (who have been hospitalized 12 times for asthma) That's what my life has revolved around the last 12 years.

Asthma medications in schools

Posted on: 12 September 2012 By: behrenreich

I am interested in finding out from Ms. Hernlen about how she was able to obtain pulse oximeters and jet nebulizers in her schools.  New York States does not allow us to have standing orders for medications other than EpiPens.  In addition, did she get funding to purchase these items or were they donated to the schools.  If she received funding, was it a grant?

Thank you.

No Bus Idling Procedures

I was really interested in how you did a air particulate study during bus idling. Is there a way that your study findings can be shared? And, if so, once you had the findings, who and how did you present them to the school board in order to implement such a policy.

Thank you!

Great presentations today. Thanks! I'd love to hear more about any of the evaluation activities done in any of the states, whether formal or informal. Thanks, Sarah

Tips for Asthma Management in Schools, Elizabeth C. Burton RN, BSN, IBCLC

Of the 138,000 children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), 14,000 students are affected by asthma. Asthma contributes to school absences and can lead to serious health complications. To address this growing problem, CMS collaborated with the Mecklenburg County Health Department and founded the Asthma Education Program in 2003. CMS is now a recognized leader in asthma and indoor air quality management.
